Historians believe the Pilgrims brought "thunder glasses" to the colonies in the 1620's and these simple devices continue to intrigue weather watchers today. Many of our barometers are of the same designs that fascinated 19 th century children while introducing them to basic scientific principles.

Indeed, the children realized, there are important factors that our human senses can't register, such as the subtle changes in the pressure of the atmosphere. These slight changes in atmospheric pressure are exaggerated by the rise and fall of the colored water level in the spout of the weather glass. Low water level indicates high pressure and fair weather, while rising water means low pressure and inclement weather.
